After months of auditioning numerous actors for the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Thor, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has landed the role!Hemsworth starred in Star Trek as Captain Kirk’s father and will also shine on the big screen in the upcoming remake of Red Dawn.

Thor will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The former Home and Away star has some solid Aussie role models he can certainly draw inspiration from, like fellow hearthrobs and Silver screen heroe’s, Hugh Jackman (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) & Eric Bana (Hulk).

Thor is set for a May 20, 2011 US release date.

The low budget New Zealand feature movie Sisterhood, won in the Best First Film category at The British Film Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Christchurch-born Emily Corcoran (pictured left) wrote, produced and played the lead role in the comedy movie.

The movie features Christchurch based actor Robert Faith, comedian Jon Gadsby and Nicholas Ball from the hit TV series Eastenders and Footballers Wives.

Inspite of the film’s success it has not yet secured theatrical distribution.

Australian actress Mia Wasikowska who has recently appeared on the HBO drama In Treatment, is famous for being cast in the lead role of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland opposite Johnny Depp.

Wasikowska, who won the role over Linsday Lohan has also finished filming Amelia; the dramatic biography about the life of the legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. The actress stars alongside Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor .

Wasikowska’s other film That Evening Sun, directed by Scott Teems, won the “Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast” at the premiere screening at the South by Southwest Film Festival just this week! Cast also includes Hal Holbrook and Ray McKinnon.

Alice In Wonderland is due for a March 5, 2010 release date in the US.

Melbourne based Australian actor Richard Di Gregorio has won the lead role in the first feature film to be cast by an online audience.

…The entire cast for The Flirting Club, by Oscar-nominated director Alex Jovy , was chosen by browsers of the itsourmovie website who voted for their favourite video auditions.

…For his audition, Di Gregorio created his own movie trailer based on a downloaded copy of the script.

…Di Gregorio landed the lead role after receiving nearly 1000 votes, the only Australian to win a part in the UK-based production.

…The movie is now in post-production, six years after its director Jovy won Best New Film Idea at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.

…”A cinema release is planned for the film, which Di Gregorio described as a “male Bridget Jones crossed with American Pie.”

Kiwi producer Lizzie Gillett’s critically-acclaimed eco documentary The Age of Stupid is about to premiere in London, already being described as the natural follow-on to Al Gore’s Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth.…The ambitious film is a mix of animation, drama and factual news content and is set in the future in a devastated world.

…The Age Of Stupid team took a punt and asked Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite to play the lead role.

…”The politicians have been coming directly to us instead of the public ground-swell rising and then pressuring the politicians,” Ms Gillett says.

“I mean so far we’ve screened in the UK Parliament, the Dutch Parliament, the EU Parliament.”

…Obama’s think tank has asked us to screen there and also Kofi Annan (a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations) is hosting a screening.”

Australian Actor Tom Pelik, the co-creator of ‘Chocolate Face’, written and directed by Trent Atkinson has just won a place in the 2009 Short + Sweet Gala Final, playing at the Seymore Centre, 20th and 21st of Febraury.

As part of the finale Pelik is shooting a documentary for broadcast on Movie Extra giving insight into the intensely crazy process that is Short and Sweet.

Pelik first caught our eye when he was cast as boyfriend Nick in the 2007 Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback starring Bryan Brown and Densie Roberts.

The busy actor has also been cast in the much anticipated Australian War movie ‘Line in the Sand‘, due for release next year and has just secured the lead role opposite well known (Poland born) Australian actress Gosia Dobrowolska in the short film production, ‘Defect’.

Recently auditioning for the role of Apollo in the remake of the 80’s Hollywood’s ‘Clash of the Titans‘, Pelik waits with baited breath after being quite pleased with his audition. Truly rare for an actor to say, but it is this confidence that will see him do well in this industry.

Australian Theatre Actor Trevor Jamieson, took out the ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role Award’ at the Sydney Theatre awards ceremony this week.

His starring role in the long running theatre production of Ngapartji Ngapartji, a bilingual production developed with Central Australian Aboriginal people has played around Australia to approximately 30,000 people, many of whom have taken part in an online Pitjantjatjara language course before seeing the show.

“I am immensely proud of this play, Its evolution over a nine-year period has helped hundreds of people both indigenous and non-indigenous explore new ways of working together and encourages cross cultural awareness, recognizing the importance of indigenous languages,” he said.

Ngapartji Ngapartji, which roughly means, “I give you something, you give me something” in Pitjantjatjara, was produced by the Big hART group.

It tells the true story of the Spinifex people (a clan of the Pitjantjatjara people) who were moved off their lands to make way for British atomic testing in the mid-20th Century…Report by the Northern Territory News.
